MUNNAR TEA PLANTATION - HISTORY

A standout amongst the most popular hill-resort towns in Kerala, Munnar is situated on the Western Ghats, in the Idukki region.

It is said that Munnar has gotten its name from the convergence of three rivers streaming near the town- Mudra puzha, Nallathanni, and Kundala.

Tea or Chai is the most most widely drunk beverage in the entire world.  Munnar is known to be the spot for one of the most seasoned tea plantations in Kerala.

Munnar owes its inheritance to John Daniel Munro–a British inhabitant of Travancore Kingdom during the 1870s. On this visit to Munnar, he fell on adoration with the spot. He rented out the Kanan Devan Hills from Kerala Varma Raja, who possessed the land.

In 1879, John Munro set up the Travancore Land Planting Agricultural Society. At first, they began developing different crops but finally discovered that tea plantation best suited the area. In 1880, A.H. Sharp planted tea in around 50 sections of land and the rest is history.

There are numerous tea estates in and around Munnar and the picturesque magnificence of this spot pulls in scores of voyagers. Pallivasal Tea Estate, AnayirankalTea Estate, Lockhart Estate, Kolukumalai Tea Estate, etc are some of the major estates here.
