Tea Gardens in Munnar


Munnar is one of the renowned destinations with the world’s best tea estate. There are more than 50 tea estates in Munnar, Most of the tea plantations are owned by TATA Group. And other major tea estates in Munnar include Harrison Malayalam, AVT tea, Michael’s tea, Brooke Bond etc. Munnar becomes a prominent hub of the tea trade in the country. According to the histories, until 1790 the Munnar and the surrounding area were forests covered. The European known as Duke of Wellington were first recognized about the tea cultivation in Munnar. Later in the year 1870, a subordinate of the ruler of Travancore leased 588 sq. km of land to a Scottish tea planter named J.D. Munro, who was the lawyer in the employee of the Travancore Government. The first tea bush was planted by A.H. Sharp at Parvathi, which is currently on the part of Sevenmallay estate. As tea has become one of the main reasons behind this hill station to international fame. The estates, It also is a famous location in the film industry too.
Tata Tea established a tea museum to provide an insight into the process that is involved in making tea powder. The museum covered curious, photographs and machineries used in factories and plantations.
Best time to visit Munnar: Tea Gardens in between the months of October and April, the weather is at its best.
Timing: The Munnar Tea Gardens are open from early morning to evening.
