Anayirankal
Dam and Lake are among the most scenic spots near Munnar and should form a part
of our itinerary when we plan a trip to this charming hill station in Kerala.
The place is frequented by elephant
herds for drinking water and hence the name. The splendid view of the
undulating tea plantations that stretch across extensively on the slopes of the
hills is a truly enchanting sight. Anayirankal Dam has snared an exclusive
niche on the tourist map due to this singular attraction, coupled of course
with the bewitching Anayirankal Lake.
The
idea of an ‘earth dam’ was first forwarded by the British in the 18th century. Anayirankal
Dam, near Munnar in Kerala, is one the first concrete dams in India, similar to
the Mattupetty Dam, constructed by Hindustan Construction Limited for Kerala
state electricity board. Spread
along 6 kilometres in Chinnakanal mountain valley, the reservoir is indeed a
treat to eyes when seen through the tea gardens and the hill range.
The
beauty of this region has triggered the proliferation of a number of resorts
overlooking the lake, offering a memorable holiday experience for tourists.
The
sparkling, serene Anayirangal Lake, the evergreen forests and the endlessly
stretching tea plantations on the undulating hill slopes make this an excellent
place to go for a holiday. Herds of elephants visit the lake to quench their
thirst and it is a remarkable sight for visitors.
As we move towards Anayirankal from Munnar we
can see the vast expanse of water surrounded by hills sheathed in greenery with
neatly aligned tea gardens, a wonderful vista. The distant view of the
Anayirankal Reservoir seems to follow you for an entire length of 15 kilometers.
Anayirankal Dam is an apt spot for photography. On our way we will encounter
women with baskets brimming with fresh fruits and vegetables grown locally. We
can lay our hands on sweet tender carrots, wild tomatoes, passion fruit and
other farm fresh vegetables. The tranquil waters of the lake will soothe your
mind and refresh our soul.
Anayirankal
Dam is situated 22 kilometers from Munnar in Idukki District and is a famed
picnic spot and tourist destination of Kerala. The best time to visit this
place is from August to May.
