One of the
many attractions in and around Munnar is a diary farm situated at Mattupetty, a
hilly region about 15 km away from Munnar town. Over 100 varieties of high-yielding
cattle and about 400 heads of cattle are reared here. The farm is part of the
Indo-Swiss Project headquartered at Mattupetty. Located amidst green
grasslands, it is 3 km away from
Mattupetty Dam. The farm is devoted to cattle development and research. This centre set up by the Government of
Switzerland. The project was launched in 1963 on the basis of a
bilateral agreement executed between the Swiss Confederation and the Government
of India. Because of the
execution of the Indo-Swiss project, a new revolutionary wave has been created
in the field of livestock farming in the state. A great milestone was the
evolution of the Swiss Brown cross breed of cattle that is perfectly suited to
the conditions of Kerala. The Indo-Swiss project has introduced innovative programs to improve the
breed of the local cattle. The breed improvement program is carried out through
the 86 artificial insemination centers in Idukki District. The Indo–Swiss dairy
farm is actually a landmark in the field of cattle rearing in Kerala. The
project is now managed by the Kerala Livestock Development and Milk Marketing
Board. An extension unit of the project also functions at Kolahalamedu near
Elappara in Peerumedu. The high breed
varieties of cattle like “Swiss Brown” and “Sunandini” have been the result of
the cattle researches of the Institute.. The project spread over 191 hectares
is a ‘holy land’ for cattle growers who arrive here from different parts of the
country. The semen bank at the
Mattupetty project has won ISO 22000 certification. In 1965, the Mattupetty
project produced the first deep frozen bull semen in the country. The project
has a capacity to produce one million doses of frozen semen in a year.
